PIC BY STEWART TURKINGTON www.stphotos.co.uk 07778 334771Jane Gates is proud Mummy to Sebastian and Rebecca as well as the Chief Executive of Sebastian’s Action Trust. The Trust was founded by her beloved son, Sebastian, a year before he sadly passed away in 2003 at the age of nine after a courageous 24 month battle with nephroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.

In the days and weeks that followed Sebastian’s passing, Jane and her husband Michael, along with Sebastian’s many friends and family set about making this inspirational boy’s last wish a reality – to establish a holiday home that would provide somewhere exclusively for families to spend precious time together, away from the hospitals and punishing treatment programmes that govern the lives of patients with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions.

After years of determined fundraising Sebastian’s wish was realised in July 2011, when The Bluebells, our purpose built facility funded, designed and constructed by the charity opened its doors. Nothing like this previously existed in the UK, making The Bluebells the first of its kind and Sebastian’s vision all the more exceptional. The Bluebells now supports families from 34 counties of England, Scotland and Wales. In the last five years the Trust has continued to address the unmet needs of more than 400 families with an expansion in its outreach service, which has seen the development of a team of trained workers offering sibling support, befriending, financial advice and advocacy, wellbeing and a range of psycho-social therapies aimed at reducing the fear, isolation and mental health issues affecting family members. The opening of Family Outreach Hubs inSlough and Bagshot has created comforting, safe environments where troubles can be shared, solutions to problems identified and stresses alleviated.

In 2012, Jane and Michael were awarded the Pride of Britain Special Recognition Award for their tireless work in Sebastian’s name, helping support so many other families in need. In 2014 the Trust was awarded with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services, the MBE equivalent for the charity sector and in May 2015 Jane was awarded an OBE for services to seriously ill children.
